Look out of the window of Bernie’s Chocolate Bar and you’ll see the shining Margate sands, the sea and across the harbour the Turner Contemporary. Inside Bernie’s, for the whole month of October, the walls will be filled with work by two artists: Julie Caves and H Locke. The exhibition will include over 30 paintings, drawings and prints.

Having set up a studio in Margate in 2014, local artists Julie Caves and H Locke spend a lot of time by the sea – beachcombing, painting and drawing – with regular pit stops in Bernie’s to defrost from the off-season wintery seaside weather. This is their first Margate exhibition; the work is inspired by their exploration of Margate and Cliftonville, from the packed Main Sands beaches in midsummer, to the deserted cliffs of Palm Bay on a January morning.

The exhibition will be open from 30 September-26 October 2016 at Bernie’s Chocolate Bar, Imperial House, 2-14 High St, Margate, CT9 1AT.

Julie Caves

Julie Caves is a contemporary artist working in East London & Margate. Primarily a painter, she sometimes makes sculpture when creating site specific work & makes an artists’ book at least once a year.

H Locke is an artist and illustrator working in London and Margate. Generally focusing on line drawing and printmaking, recent forays into linocut are thanks to the Margate influence.
